Amiga OS4 Applications Summary


Presented at AmiWest 2010


At the 2010 AmiWest show, I made a presentation of some of the Amiga applications on AmigaOS4
for productive computing on the internet, work and play.

The following is a list of some of those invaluable Amiga applications:

INTERNET CLIENT APPS

OWB A native web browser using the same WebKit engine as in Apple's Safari that let's you see most of the web the way Mac and Windows boxes see it.

IBrowse The old Amiga standby... While it might not do modern web pages justice, it is still the world's most flexible & responsive web browser.

lpr / PrtMan A printer device that allows printing to printers and print servers using the LPD protocol.

HINTS:
Just because your networked printer or print server doesn't say it supports LPR/LPD printing, try it anyway! It worked for me!

Use the "PrtMan" Print Manager to provide print spooling - background printing on your network printer.

Gnash
An open source flash animation player from linux that has been partially ported to OS4. It still needs to be integrated into an Amiga webbrowser, but available for offline testing.

DVPlayer A robust and fast home grown commercial application that plays MPEG, AVI & WMV videos and DVD disks.

HINT:
Make Tunenet your default tool for M3U and PLS files. Then you can download and save those files from station websites, just double-click one and you're listening to the station in seconds.
GetVideo A set of ARexx scripts for downloading videos from YouTube and a few other sites and playing them on your Amiga.

Use the FFMpeg program (below) to convert flash videos you want to keep from .flv's into more easily played .avi or Mpeg files for DVPlayer.
FFMpeg Another unix port of a pair of CLI programs that can play, convert and even minimally edit video files.

ADRipper A home grown program for "ripping" your(!) audio CD's into MP3 or OGG files. This program automatically goes to the internet to download disk & track names.

Don't forget to set the default tool for the new MP3 files & M3U playlists to TuneNet for seamlessly playing your music with a double-click.

Pagestream Our long time, home grown Amiga Desktop Publishing Program. A world-class application going through continued development into versions "5" and "5-Pro" as well as OS4 native versions. Looking forward to renewed stability.

Cygnix The OS4 port of a unix "X windows" front end (or "server" in unix parlance) for running OS4 native, unix applications - like a larger scale version of the MUI GUI system. Within this environment, you can run a number of other X windows OS4 programs ("Cygnix" apps).

ImageFx The old workhorse, 68k Amiga program still gets the job done running on the OS4 JIT. ("Petunia"). Purchase a full version from NovaDesign or download the lite version.

AmiGS
Ghostscript
AmiPDF and AmiGS are programs that provide a GUI around the unix XPDF and Ghostscript applications. They provide a modern way to view, print and convert PDF, Postscript and EPS files. For the CLI handy, the Ghostcript CLI app provides another means of interacting with PDF or PS files.

HINTS:
Use the Ghostscript CLI program for combining multiple PDF or postscript files into one PDF file.

Use AmiGS for opening postscript files from other apps (FinalWriter?) and making PDF files or printing to printers supported by Ghostscript.
Blender An OS4 native port of the linux 3D modeling application.

Hollywood A home grown application for building multimedia presentations and standalone applications. Amazingly enough, you can build projects that can be viewed on almost any lesser platform, even Windows and MacOSX.
